95. When to do Something Worth Doing
At Some Point

I’d like to give this idea credit because I know I heard it or read it somewhere, but I can’t remember where. Maybe you’ve heard it, or maybe it’s my idea, but it doesn’t matter, so here it is.
If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing now.
The phrase that kills more potential than perhaps any other is “at some point I will”.
If you will at some point, just do it now.
It’s what the best people I know do. It truly is a common trait amongst high achievers. It’s the ability to eliminate time between thought and action.
Sure, action is limited, and not all action is appropriate in every scenario, but you can always put things in motion. Ask those you admire what they have going on these days. My bet would be that they’ve got all kinds of things in motion. People with things in motion are the ones who get things done and change the world.
People in motion do things we write books about. They make the headlines and they ruffle feathers. It’s not always for the best, but it is often enough.
One of the main differences between you and the person you might want to be is that who you want to be doesn’t wait to take action. Do you?
At some point I’d like to start a business.
At some point I’d like to start a family.
At some point I’d like to give back.
At some point I’d like to start saving.
Exactly what point do you plan on taking action?
How about now?
If it’s going to be important, doesn’t that mean it already is? If it’s something your future self wants, wouldn’t it make sense to start making it happen?
I know things don’t happen overnight, but they can happen faster than you think. That is, if you take action.
Time is of the essence if we’d like to live up to who we can be, so we can probably do a better job with the amount we have.
Isn’t it interesting that such a finite thing like time is spent flippantly on things that do not add anything to our lives? Contrast that with money, a resource that can be replenished.
We’re tight with our wallets, living like we got robbed every time we exit the Costco parking lot, but not with our time.
This one really gets me, when people will spend 30 minutes waiting in line to save a couple bucks on gas at Costco. Anything to hold on to a few more pennies. Never mind the extra time you spent that is now gone forever.
If everyone had intentional plans to make their lives better in motion, I have a feeling that line up would be shorter. There will still be some who use their time to save that money, but it’s different when it’s with a distinct purpose.
If you’re trying to save. What for? For how long? What’s the result you’re moving toward that makes saving any amount you can worth it? With answers to those questions, you can honestly say that you’re taking action today for a better tomorrow.
And that’s really what this is all about. If not your tomorrow, somebody else’s could sure use some improvement, so let’s make a habit of contributing right now.
If there’s anything you feel the pull to do at some point, get the show on the road. Put things in motion and see how far you can get today. If it’s going to be important at some point, consider it urgent.
Progress will take as long as you allow it to. Shorten the leash and get moving. Not at some point.
Now.
