73. Be the Weapon

When Stuff Doesn’t Matter

When I became a real estate agent, my wife and I were sharing one car. It was rundown Mazda 3. Fuel efficient and reliable, but not exactly a vehicle that screams success.

Whenever I’d meet clients at a house or elsewhere, I’d always make sure I’d arrive early enough to do a couple laps of the neighbourhood and find a spot to park far enough away that you wouldn’t see my car if you pulled up to our meeting spot. This act was easily justified as an act of service to my clients to make sure the best spot to park was reserved for them, but really, I just didn’t want them to see my car.

I was worried that my client seeing the car I was driving would discourage them from continuing to work with me. Was it ever a factor in generating business? Who knows, but probably not.

Eventually, we were able to buy a nicer car. One that I didn’t mind being seen rolling up to a property in. Did this help me generate more clients and do more deals?
