65. The Medium is the Message

Mastering Modern Communication

I once had a client who lipped me off via text message and then didn’t acknowledge it when we met face to face. Another time a colleague ignored a text I sent after being quite pleasant in our prior meeting in person.

I’ve quickly, conveniently arranged appointments over email only to have counterparts no show, and I’ve used the good old fashioned telephone to diffuse a situation ignited by emojis.

Not all communication is created equal, therefore, it should not be treated like it is. The same message communicated by text, email, phone or face to face is not received the same way across the board.

Since so much communication is done remotely, it’s essential that we develop our skills to be clear with our messaging. It’s also to our benefit to recognize when it’s necessary to change our method of communication.
