45. Uncommon Amongst The Uncommon

Discovering What It Takes To Stand Out

Today’s idea comes from David Goggins. If you’ve been around a while, you know that I love that guy. However, I understand that he’s not for everyone, and without the proper context, his ideas can do more harm than good at times. This particular idea of his is to be uncommon amongst the uncommon, and to illustrate, I’ll tell you about the last time we stayed at the Fairmont Chateau in Whistler, BC. Following my brief story, I’ll explain why being uncommon amongst uncommon people is extraordinarily beneficial, and how you can trend that direction.

Every May, we find ourselves in Whistler at our favourite hotel. In recent years, we started saying in a Gold room, which comes with added benefits, an exclusive lounge and complimentary food at all hours of the day. Staying in a Gold room has a way of making you feel much more important than you actually are. The exclusivity of this section of the hotel puts a bit more air in your head.

Sitting in the lounge eating breakfast one morning after a workout down in the hotel gym, I found myself feeling particularly uncommon. Not only were we in the Gold lounge, but we had already completed a workout before breakfast. What couldn’t we do? That feeling didn’t last long.
