34. Be Like Pippin?
3 Lessons From 15 Seconds

If you’ve ever watched The Lord of The Rings, you’ll probably remember this scene in which the slightly stupid, slightly endearing character, Pippin, shows a fantastic display of memorable naivety. Have a watch of this 15 second clip:
The fellowship of the ring is about to embark on a treacherous journey to destroy the one ring to rule them all in the fires of Mount Doom, and Pippin figures he’ll tag along. Little does he know what he’s signing up for. All he knows is that his friends are going off on an adventure and he doesn’t want to miss out.
Now that you know the scene and the character I’ll refer to again later, let me take you down a tangent.
Each Coffee With Cody blog topic comes from a long note I store in my phone. This note consists of short bullet points, thoughts I’ve had over the years, that at one time I believed would fit well into my future book. Last year, I began expanding on each bullet point I had in this note once per week in the form of this blog. Every week, I come back to my note and see what my past self wrote down for me to expand on. This week, the next bullet point contained just 3 words: “Be like Pippin”. I knew immediately what I must have been thinking of when I jotted that into my note. It could only be referring to the aforementioned scene from the first movie of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
It was the idea of diving in to things and not worrying about the details. It was about doing more and thinking less, but here’s the thing. I struggled to get going on writing about this topic because I no longer agree with it. Like I said, this topic was an idea from my past self, not one I just thought of. Today, I like to gather as many details as possible before I commit to something. As such, my present self found multiple other ideas while contemplating if I still believed we should “be like Pippin”.
There are 3 specific concepts that this made me think of, so rather than simply writing about living with a bit more reckless abandon, which is not necessarily a good idea, I thought I’d fill you in on some more current thoughts Pipin has led me to.
