Here’s a quote I hope you can use today:

If you don’t like how it is for you, change it. If it doesn’t suit you, change it. If it doesn’t please you, change it. If it isn’t enough, change it. And I challenge you to do that because you can change. See you don’t ever have to be the same again after tonight, only by choice.

Jim Rohn

If you think there are changes you need to make, take ownership and make the changes. For things to change for you, you’ve got to change.

And if you don’t think changes need to be made, I commend you. However, perhaps I can convince you to evolve.

If you haven’t made any changes in a while, it might be time to take inventory on what’s going on around you. Check your stats. How often do you see your kids? Is it becoming more or less frequent? Is your bank account moving the right direction? Are you being asked to dinner as often as you once were? How’s your body mass index? Are you giving away more money than you used to? Are there more miles per week on the vehicles?

Check your stats before concluding that no changes need to be made. From where I sit, change is necessary, but it’s uncommon.

We get set in our ways. We figure this is just how it is, therefore it’s just how it will be. Maybe it’s even good, but is it too easy?

The best things in life are never easy. So are you being challenged? Physically? Mentally? Relationally? Spiritually?

Change is hard, and hard things are necessary to consistently evolve into who we’re meant to become. If you’re still here, there’s more for you to do, so keep evolving.

Young kids do every year. I hear parents describe their children becoming new versions of themselves as they enter their second year of life. Then they turn 3 and develop a new personality. Then they turn 3 and a half and discover a new passion. Then they turn 4 and outgrow their shyness. That evolution tends to stop once we become adults, but we should know better.

Does it make any sense to evolve until we’re 30 and then stay the same for another 60 years? To me it doesn’t. To me, one of the scariest things is looking at photo albums from the past and realizing how little has changed.

Just this morning I stumbled upon a photo of our living room with our Christmas tree and our dog in the centre. I thought it was from a few months ago, but when I looked at the date it showed December 2022. I remember December 2022, and I remember hoping things would continue to improve over the next few years. Yet, I thought of our home environment, and it hadn’t changed in 3 years.

December 2026 will look different. For us, literally, because environment is one of the primary ways to inflict change. Just read Dr. Benjamin Hardy’s book “Willpower Doesn’t Work” to understand exactly how.

Have you changed your environment in a while? Do you go new places and meet new people? It’s hard to evolve and grow if we don’t expand our physical world. And if you think change needs to be made but you don’t know exactly what, start with your environment.

Switch the routine. Sleep on the other side of the bed. Order something different from your usual restaurant. Just something to make sure nothing goes stale.

It’s a thought I’m having as our business turns 2 this week. As good as things are going, I’m on the lookout for ways to change things up a bit. Not because we have to, but because I know things get stale with time. 2 years in business isn’t long enough for that, but it’s long enough to start looking for where we’re vulnerable. I’m not quite sure what will need to happen, but at some point I know there will be necessary changes.

That’s just how things go, and it’s better that way. Not much stays the same, so we shouldn’t either.

Today, you’ll either fall into one of three categories.

  1. You know precisely what changes you ought to make to improve your life

  2. You know change needs to be made but you don’t know what to change

  3. You’re unsure if change needs to be made at all

Here’s a thought for each of you:

  1. Do it now. Or spend today preparing and make the changes tomorrow. Nobody will stop you but you.

  2. Get up 30 minutes earlier than normal tomorrow and read any book you can find that’s already in your house for those 30 minutes. If you don’t have a book, get to the library today and pick one up. Do this every day. It is the easiest way to change your life. What to do next will come to you.

  3. Check your stats and be honest. Perhaps things are going well, but your ability to impact more lives may be limited by your lack of change over the years.

Your thoughts?

See you next Thursday.
